  • Hermes the Thief

    Norman O. Brown.

The University of Wisconsin Press: 1947. Octavo. Hardcover with a dust jacket. First edition. Previous owner's name inscribed on the inside of the front board. The first free end paper has some wear where a sticker might have been peeled off. Price-clipped jacket is a bit faded and has a small tear along the bottom edge of the front cover. Book is near fine, jacket is very good.

"The typical cattle-raider of Greek mythology is Heracles, that embodiment of the ideal of carrying a big stick and talking loudly. Hermes is just the opposite type; the whole emphasis in the mythology of Hermes is on mental skill or cunning."
