A Horseback Ride from Oregon to Mexico

    J. Smeaton Chase.

Houghton Mifflin: 1913. Later impression of the first edition. Hardcover with an acetate jacket. Octavo. Smudges on the jacket from wear with one tear on the bottom, and smudges on the cover. Indentations and scrapes on the corners of the spine as well as on the tips of the boards. Water damage wraps around the back cover but the board is unwarped by it. The crown is worn down and a fold is across the title there. Leaves are tanned but the pages and text are clean. 326 pages. Very good.

Vamanos, amigos. Chase wrote this to record California in its last moment of true but pleasant wildness. With a light touch and insight into the West's landscape, its history, and the true meaning of travel, he is the perfect riding companion.

"There is only one region of the United States, and indeed there can be but few parts of the world, where one may travel with enjoyment for half a year continuously, secure from climatic vagaries, and carrying on the animal one rides everything needful for comfort by day and night."
